One answering goal from St. Andrew’s, followed by a penalty scored by Max Wartelle, took the score to 3-1 to the home team at the second changeover.

A dazzling long shot by Poppy Simpson-Wells made it a seemingly comfortable 4-1, but this was almost immediately answered by a similar long shot at the other end, putting St. Andrew’s right back in the game when the whistle blew for half time.

After the break, a quick St. Andrew’s runner made it 4-3, and the pressure (and perhaps an element of tiredness) seemed to creep into EUKC’s previously solid game. Penalties were given away and missed by both sides, but the St. Andrew’s penalty taker held his nerve to make it 4-4. A shot from close to the post a few minutes later gave Saints their first lead of the game, piling on the pressure and continuing this swing in momentum.

More fractured play and uncertain passing from Edinburgh gave Saints the opportunity to go 6-4 up, with a mid-range effort that was not wasted. Another missed Edinburgh penalty frustrated the home team even further, but a nice move from Sarah Kelly made it 6-5 soon after.

However, this was not to be Edinburgh’s night. Two quick Saints goals pushed the lead to three, and even one of Cathy Campbell’s trademark long shots could only bring the final score to 8-6 in favour of the away team.

As they say in that other obscure sport whose name escapes this reporter, it’s a game of two halves. While Edinburgh started strong, a weak second half performance – capitalised on by a hungry St. Andrew’s team – proved to be EUKC’s undoing. However, many of the mistakes that were made are easily fixed, and Edinburgh will be looking to prove themselves in Nottingham next weekend. And if they happen to meet Saints along the way, so much the better – the team from North of the Forth should be prepared for a wiser, stronger EUKC side.

Jamie Miller – Currant Affairs Correspondent

The EUKC first team lined up against the St. Andrew’s University firsts on Thursday evening, in what promised to be a tightly fought contest, as well as important court time in the run up to Northerns later this month.

[6,10

post-1232","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-archived-match-reports","category-firsts
["GET
