The Afterburner
A two versioned move here. You know those times when you’ve got a great runner but your opponent’s just that little bit too quick? That’s when to kick in the Afterburner. This works equally well with the male and female roles reversed. Depending on how your defender is positioned when you reach the post, take one of the following two options.
- Start off in 2-2 with the ball in feed. One of the female attackers tries to do a runner but her opponent is slightly too fast.
- If, once past the feed, the defender is still post-side of the attacker she veers outwards and shouts like hell for the ball – remember the feed may not be able to see the attacker so easily. The feeder passes the ball, but not by turning towards the attacker as they normally would as their own defender will be trying to make that pass hard. Instead they spin away from their team-mate and pass it around their own defender. In the above animation this would mean the feeder turns right and passes with their left hand.
- The defender tries to follow the attacker but can’t keep up with the change of direction, having just exerted themselves to prevent the runner. The female attacker scores from a short range veer shot. Meanwhile, the feeder should be moving into the new feed position and the other attacking player should be moving into their line of sight.
