18th Feb 2012: Ed Uni 2 vs Glasgow 1 vs Glasgow 2

In just one part of a busy korfballing weekend for EUKC, the 2nds played Glasgow 1 and 2 on Saturday. Due to diminishing Glasgow numbers, Edinburgh effectively played the same team twice, the first match being the one that counted towards the league. Glasgow went ahead early with a long shot from their star girl player, but Edinburgh kept the score line pretty tight with goals from Jean Le Roux Fourie and Paul Shields. After a team talk at half time, Edinburgh came back a refreshed team, playing better korfball, but sadly not increasing the score. Injuries to both teams including a nasty ankle roll to Helena Corner put Edinburgh off their stride, playing great defence, including from 2nd team debutant Jill Williamson, but finding it difficult to do much about Glasgow’s accurate long shots. Final score was 10-2 to Glasgow. Congratulations to Jem Horsley-Downie for taking her first ever MVP.

In the second game, few Glasgow substitutions took place, but the Edinburgh team was switched around with Coach Will and Chris Kay taking sideline stats and providing encouragement in the form of EY promotional jelly beans. The psychological impact of playing Glasgow 2 rather than 1, despite it being the same team but one or two players, seemed stark. Edinburgh played their own game and enjoyed themselves much more because of it. Captain Rosy Nolan won the first jelly beans of the match for winning collect from Glasgow’s Nicol. Goals from Paul Shields, Matt Gordon and Jean Le Roux Fourie meant Edinburgh came out on top 5-4, a good result, but frustrating we didn’t play like that in the first game.

Get well soon to Helena!
